“All things manifesting in the lower worlds exist first in
the intangible rings of the upper spheres,
so that creation is, in truth,
the process of making tangible the intangible
by extending the intangible into various vibratory rates.”

Colour Symbolism in Freemasonry

Colour is a fundamental element of masonic symbolism. It appears in the descriptions of aprons, sashes and other items of regalia, in the furnishings and wall-hangings of the lodge room for each degree or ceremony, in the robes worn in certain degrees, and in many other masonic accoutrements. The colours specified in each case appear to have no rational justification. As A.E. Waite wrote: "There is no recognized scheme or science of colors in Masonry. Here and there in our rituals we find an 'explanation' for the use of a certain colour, but this usually turns out to be merely a peg on which to hang a homiletic lecture about it, having little if any connection with the origins of its use."

This paper seeks to find some rationale behind the selection of colours as masonic symbols, restricting our examination to the Craft degrees, and those of the Ancient and Accepted (Scottish) Rite, with occasional reference to the Royal Arch.

It was early recognized that colours have a strong influence on the mind and therefore can be employed for certain moral or aesthetic ends, through symbolical, allegorical and mystical allusions. Newton wrote of 'the sensual and moral effects of colour,' where sensual must be understood as 'transmitted by the senses.' Goethe, too, wrote extensively on colour (over 2,000 pages! ).

Masonic Blue

Blue, then, is the Craft colour par excellence, used in aprons, collars, and elsewhere. Let us quote Bro. Chetwode Crawley. "The ordinary prosaic enquirer will see in the selection of blue as the distinctive colour of Freemasonry only the natural sequence of the legend of King Solomon's Temple. For the Jewshad been Divinely commanded to wear...a 'riband of blue' (Numbers 15:38).' A modern translation of that verse in Numbers is: 'You are to take tassels on the comers of your garments with a blue cord on each tassel.' The biblical text, then, refers to blue cords to be incorporated in the tassels worn by pious Jews, while Bro. Chetwode Crawley is speaking of blue ribbons which somehow became the embellishments of aprons, sashes and collars.

Another suggested source of the colour men-tioned by Bro. Chetwode Crawley could be its association with St. Mary, mother of Jesus, 'so prominent a figure in the pre-Reformation invo-cations of the Old Charges, drawing in her train the red ensign of St. George of Cappadocia, her steward and our Patron Saint.'

Blue and red, the heraldic azure and gules are sometimes associated with the chevron of the Arms of the Masons' Company.

The Masonic Symbolism of Colours

a) White

White, the original colour of the masonic apron, was always considered an emblem of purity and innocence, exemplified in images such as the white lily or fallen snow.

Plato asserts that white is par excellence the colour of the gods. In the Bible, Daniel sees God as a very old man, dressed in robes white as snow (Daniel 7:9). In the New Testament Jesus is transfigured on Mount Tabor before Peter, James and John, when his clothes became 'daz-zling white, whiter than anyone in the world could bleach them' (Mark 9:3). Officiating priests of many religions wore and still wear white garments. In ancient Jerusalem both the priests and the Levites who performed the Temple rites assumed white clothing.

Among Romans, the unblemished character of a person aspiring to public office was indicated by a toga whitened with chalk. This is the origin of the word 'candidate,' from candidatus 'dressed in white.' Verdicts at trials were decid-ed by small stones (calculi) thrown into an urn: white to absolve, black to condemn.

White signifies beginnings, virtualities, the white page facing the writer, 'the space where the possible may become reality.' White is therefore understandably the colour of initiation. It is a symbol of perfection, as represented by the swan in the legend of Lohengrin. In this aspect it is related to light or sky blue, which in Hebrew is tchelet and may be connected semantically with tichla (perfection, completeness) and tach-lit (completeness, purpose). (See also the obser-vations on the symbolism of blue.) Among the Celts the sacred colours of white, blue and green were understood to stand for light, truth and hope. Druids were robed in white.

White is also connected with the idea of death and resurrection. Shrouds are white; spirits are represented as wearing white veils. White, rather than black, is sometimes the colour of mourning, among the ancient kings of France, for instance, and in Japan. White, finally, can signify joy. Leukos (Greek) means both white and cheerful; as does candidus in Latin. The Romans marked festive days with lime and unlucky days with charcoal.

b) Blue

Blue is the colour of the canopy of heaven:

azure, cerulean or sky blue. 'Universally, it denotes immortality, eternity, chastity, fidelity; pale blue, in particular, represents prudence and goodness.' In the Royal Arch, the Third Principal is told that it is an emblem of benefi-cence and charity.

In biblical times, blue was closely related to purple. Generations of scholars have puzzled over the correct meaning of tchelet (light blue) and argaman (purple), usually mentioned together, without reaching satisfactory conclu-sions. Only recently has the problem been final-ly solved in the course of far-reaching research into the dyestuffs and dyeing methods used by the ancient Phoenicians and Hebrews. Both colours, it turns out, were produced with dyeing materials extracted from murex, a shellfish abun-dant on the coast of Lebanon. The tchelet was obtained from a short-variety (murex trunculus); the argaman came from two kinds: the single-spined murex brandaris and, to a lesser extent, the Red-mouth (thais haemastoma).

Some historians have concluded that, in the Middle Ages in Europe, blue was low in popular esteem. The favourite colour was then red because the dyers could achieve strong shades of it which brought to mind the prestigious purple of the ancient world. Towards the end of that period, blue gradually became recognized as a princely colour, the 'Royal Blue' which dis-placed red at court, red then being used by the lower classes and so regarded as vulgar. Blue and gold (or yellow) then became the colours of choice for shields, banners and livery.

It may not be by chance, therefore, that the Master was said to be clothed in 'yellow jacket and blue breeches,' in the famous metaphor first used in an exposure, 'The Mystery of Free-Masonry,' which appeared in The Daily Journal in 1730. The traditional explanations of the phrase relate it to the compasses, the arms of gold, gilt or brass and the points of steel or iron. (Steel can certainly appear blue; iron can not!)

Blue was used royally in France noticeably as the background to the fleur-de-lys. It became associated with terms of prestige such as blue blood, cordon bleu (originally the sash of the Order of the Holy Spirit), blue riband (of the Atlantic) and blue chip.

c) Purple

Purple is a symbol of imperial royalty and rich-ness but can also relate to penitence and the solemnity of Lent and Advent in the seasons of the Christian church.

Although described (in the Royal Arch, for instance) as 'an emblem of union, being com-posed of blue and crimson,' I believe this to be a somewhat contrived explanation. But an interest-ing fact, which appears to have escaped most writers on this subject, is that in the Cabbala, the Hebrew word for purple, argaman, is a mnemon-ic, representing the initials of the names of the five principal angels in Jewish esoterism.

d) Red

Red or crimson, the colour of fire and heat, is traditionally associated with war and the mili-tary. In Rome the paludamentum, the robe wom by generals, was red. The colour of blood is nat-urally connected with the idea of sacrifice, strug-gle and heroism. It also signifies charity, devo-tion, abnegation--perhaps recalling the pelican that feeds its progeny with its own blood.

In Hebrew, the name of the first man, Adam, is akin to red, blood and earth. This connection with earth may explain, perhaps, the connection of red with the passions, carnal love, the cosmet-ics used by women to attract their lovers. It is the colour of youth. Generally, it represents expan-sive force and vitality. It is the emblem of faith and fortitude and, in the Royal Arch, of fervency and zeal. It has also a darker side, connected with the flames of hell, the appearance of demons, the apoplectic face of rage.

Scarlet was the distinctive colour of the Order of the Golden Fleece, established in 1429 by Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy (1419-67). Not only was the mantle scarlet, but also the robe and a special hat--the chaperon--with hanging streamers.

e) Green

Green has been directly associated with the ideas of resurrection and immortality...The aca-cia (the masonic evergreen) has been suggested as a symbol of a moral life or rebirth, and also of immortality. To the ancient Egyptians, green was the symbol of hope.

The Grand Lodge of Scotland has adopted green as its emblematic colour, and, in varying shades, it is incorporated in the dress and fur-nishings of degrees and Orders beyond the Craft in English, Irish and Scottish Freemasonry.

f) Yellow

Yellow is rarely seen in lodge, except perhaps on the Continent. It is an ambivalent colour, rep-resenting both the best and the worst, the colour of brass and honey, but also the colour of sulphur and cowardice. Yellow is the perfection of the Golden Age, the priceless quality of the Golden Fleece and the golden apples of the Hesperides. It is also the colour of the patch imposed on the Jews as a badge of infamy. In the sixteenth cen-tury, the door of a traitor's home was painted yellow. A 'jaundiced view' expresses hostility, but the most memorable symbolism of yellow is that it reminds us of the sun and of gold.

g) Black

The three fundamental colours found in all civ-ilizations, down to the Middle Ages in Europe, are white, red and black. These, too, may be regarded as the principal colours of Freemasonry: the white of the Craft degrees, the red of the Royal Arch and of certain of the degrees of the Ancient and Accepted (Scottish) Rite, and the black of some of its others, and of the Knights of Malta. The other colours of the rainbow find limited uses; they serve only to frame or line the white lambskin upon which so many aprons are based, or for sashes and other items of regalia.

Traditionally, black is the colour of darkness, death, the underworld although it was not introduced for mouming until about the middle of the fourteenth century, such use becoming habitual only in the sixteenth. The 'black humour' of melancholy (atara hilis) the black crow of ill omen, the black mass, black market, 'black days': all refer to negative aspects. The Black Stone at Mecca is believed by Muslims to have been at one time white; the sins of man caused the transformation.

Black has also a positive aspect, that of gravity and sobriety; the Reformation in Europe frowned upon colourful clothing. Formal dress for day and evening wear continues to be black. It is associated with the outlaw and the banners of pirates and anarchists, but also with rebirth and transformation.

In the French and Scottish Rites, the lodge in the third degree is decorated in black and is strewn with white or silver tears, representing the sorrow caused by the death of Hiram Abif.

Conclusion

A review of the traditional explanations for the choice of certain colours in masonic symbol-ism reveals their weaknesses. In considering the use of blue in the English regalia of a Master Mason, it has been possible to find a connection between one of the Hebrew words for that colour and the Holy Bible.

O great Mistress of Cats,
Lady of pleasure in ancient times,

And you grant your favors capriciously,
Giving them only where the whim takes you.
Yet we who inhabit this strange world,
Below you yet in power over all your subjects,
We would ask your blessing on us
As we give our blessing to those who are in our mercy.
May we never forget, Lady of tame predators,
Who are not so tame as we might like to believe,
That when we are in a position of power
We should never forget the spirit of those beneath us.
Bless us with joy in life, Lady Bast,
And may we go to our graves
Never forgetting what it is like to play.
Hail Bast! (Repeat response)
Hail Bast! (Repeat response)
Hail Bast! (Repeat response)

(For the rest of the afternoon, work should be done at an animal shelter, or spent playing with cats, which on this day alone is not shirking the work. Some folk of the House may choose to be cats themselves for this day; they need do no work, and it is lucky to pet them, but they must not stand on two legs or the spell will be broken. During this time, they must meditate on what it is to be in the strange predicament of the tamed predator who is dependent on the whims of humans.)

All things hidden
And from whom nothing
Can be concealed forever,
Guide us surely and skillfully
Out of the darkness
Of our own blind searching.

Chant:
Dark God of the West
Take me home
I am a wandering soul

Call and response while pouring the beer libation:

Bring us forth out of darkness
Guide us through the waste lands
Find for us the track of Fate
Like all our ancestors
Like all the souls of the beloved dead

Lucifer was originally a Latin word meaning "light-bearer"
A Roman astrological term for the "Morning Star", the planet Venus.

- In the literary tradition, Satan was called Lucifer before the Fall from Heaven. According to the legends of the rebellion, Lucifer was the chief in the hierarchy of Heaven, and the preeminent Arch Angel among all created beings in beauty, power, and wisdom. To him God allotted dominion and power over the earth; and even after his fall from grace, he seemed to still retain some of this power and status, if not all of it. Lucifer's sin was pride, an act of pure egoism and malice; he loved himself, above anything else and to the exclusion of everything, without the excuse of ignorance. As governor of Heaven, he was seated next to the Lord; but as soon as God left His seat, Lucifer, swelling with pride, would sit himself on the heavenly throne. A indignant Michael becomes enraged by Lucifer's pride and arrogance and battles with him,. After a angelical war, succeeds in banishing Lucifer and his followers from Heaven, casting all down to the infernal dwelling for all eternity. The one once called Lucifer in Heaven, was now named Satan on earth; the angels that joined with him became the demons, of whom he was lord.

THE MAGICAL CIRCLE from the Ars Goetia

This is the Form of the Magical Circle of King Solomon, the which he made that he might preserve himself therein from the malice of these Evil Spirits. This Magical Circle is to be made 9 feet across, and the Divine Names are to be written around it, beginning at EHYEH, and ending at LEVANAH, Luna.

(Colours. - The space between the outer and inner circles, where the serpent is coiled, with the Hebrew names written along his body, is bright deep yellow. The square in the centre of the circle, where the word “Master” is written, is filled in with red. All names and letters are in black. In the Hexagrams the outer triangles where the letters A, D, O, N, A, I, appear are filled in with bright yellow, the centres, where the T-shaped crosses are, blue or green. In the Pentagrams outside the circle, the outer triangles where “Te, tra, gram, ma, ton,” is written, are filled in bright yellow, and the centres with the T crosses written therein are red.”)

THE MAGICAL TRIANGLE OF SOLOMON.

This is the Form of the Magical Triangle, into the which Solomon did command the Evil Spirits.  It is to be made at 2 feet distance from the Magical Circle and it is 3 feet across.  Note that this triangle is to be placed toward that quarter whereunto the Spirit belongeth. The Types of Djinn

There are different types of djinn. The Qur’an mentions only three: Djinn, ‘ifrit, and marid. Other names [are] jann, ghul, shaitans, hinn, nasnas, shiqq, si’lat, and a host of others. The names above vary depending on the region in the Middle Eastern country.

Some of the best-known Djinn are:

Ghul – The ghul (ghoul) are shape-shifting cannibalistic and blood-drinking creatures that feed on the flesh of human beings, especially travelers, children or corpses stolen out of graves. The oldest references to ghul in Arabian lore are found in The Book of 1001 Nights. There are several types of ghul. The most feared is a female type (ghula) which has the ability to appear as a normal, mortal woman. According to lore, such a creature marries an unsuspecting man, who becomes her prey.

The ghul are nocturnal creatures who inhabit graveyards, ruins and other lonely places. Sometimes they are described as dead humans who sleep for long periods in secret graves, then awake, rise and feast on both the living and the dead. Ghul also personify the unknown terrors held by the desert. In Persian lore the ghul has the legs of a donkey and the horns of a goat.

The nasnas was said to be the offspring of a shiqq (see below) and a human being.

All things hidden
And from whom nothing
Can be concealed forever,
Guide us surely and skillfully
Out of the darkness
Of our own blind searching.

Dark God of the West
Take me home
I am a wandering soul

Call and response while pouring the beer libation:

Bring us forth out of darkness
Guide us through the waste lands
Find for us the track of Fate
Like all our ancestors
Like all the souls of the beloved dead
We will find a way

We will find a way
Forth out of the darkness
And into the blazing Sun.

A practical guide to occult candle magic

1 One of the simplest of magical arts which comes under the heading of natural magic is candle burning. It is simple because it employs little ritual and few ceremonial artifacts. The theatrical props of candle magic can be purchased at any department store and its rituals can be practiced in any sitting room or bedroom.

2 Most of us have performed our first act of candle magic by the time we are two years old. Blowing out the tiny candles on our first birthday cake and making a wish is pure magic. This childhood custom is based on the three magical principals of concentration, will power and visualization. In simple terms, the child who wants his wish to come true has to concentrate (blow out the candles), visualize the end result (make a wish) and hope that it will come true( will power).

3 The size and shape of the candles you use is unimportant, although highly decorative, extra large, or unusually shaped candles will not be suitable as these may create distractions when the magician wants to concentrate on the important work in hand. Most magicians prefer to use candles of standard or uniform size if possible. Those which are sold in different colors for domestic use are ideal.

4 The candles you use for any type of magical use should be virgin, that is unused. Under no circumstances use a candle which has already adorned a dinner table or been used as a bedroom candle or night-light. There is a very good occult reason for not using anything but virgin materials in magic. Vibrations picked up by secondhand materials or equipment may disturb your workings and negate their effectiveness.

5 Some magicians who are artistically inclined prefer to make their own candles for ritual and magical use. This is a very practical exercise because not only does it impregnate the candle with your own personal vibrations, but the mere act of making your own candle is magically potent. Specialist shops sell candle wax and molds together with wicks, perfumes, and other equipment.

6 The hot wax is heated until liquid and then poured into the mold through which a suitably sized wick has already been threaded. The wax is then left to cool and once is this has occurred the mold is removed , leaving a perfectly formed candle. Special oil-soluble dyes and perfumes can be added to the wax before the cooling process is complete to provide suitable colors and scents for a particular magical ritual. Craft shops which sell candle making supplies can also provide do-it-yourself books explaining the technicalities of the art to the beginner.

7 Once you have purchased or made your ritual candle it has to be oiled or 'dressed' before burning. The purpose of dressing the candle is to establish a psychic link between it and the magician through a primal sensory experience. By physically touching the candle during the dressing procedure, you are charging it with our own personal vibrations and also concentrating the desire of your magical act into the wax. The candle is becoming an extension of the magician's mental power and life energy.

8 When you dress a candle for magical use, imagine that it is a psychic magnet with a North and a South pole. Rub the oil into the candle beginning at the top or North end and work downwards to the half-way point. Always brush in the same direction downwards. This process is then repeated by beginning at the bottom or south end and working up to the middle.

9 The best type of oils to use for dressing candles are natural ones which can be obtained quite easily. Some occult suppliers will provide candle magic oils with exotic names. If the magician does not want to use these, he can select suitable oils or perfumes from his own sources. The oils soluble perfumes sold by craft shops for inclusion in candles can be recommended.

10 the candles you use can be colored in accordance with the following magical uses: white- spirituality and peace. red- health, energy, strength, courage, sexual potency. pink- love affection and romance. yellow- intellectualism, imagination, memory and creativity green- fertility, abundance, good luck and harmony blue-inspiration, occult wisdom, protection and devotion purple Material wealth, higher psychic ability, spiritual power and idealism silver- clairvoyance, inspiration, astral energy and intuition orange- ambition. career matters and the law.

11 If you wanted to use candle magic for healing, you would select a red candle to burn. To pass an exam, burn a yellow candle, to gain esoteric knowledge burn a blue candle or for material gain, burn a purple one. It is obvious these colors relate to the signs of the zodiac and the planetary forces.

12 The simplest form of candle magic is to write doesn't the objective of your ritual on a virgin piece of paper. You can use color paper which matches the candle. Write your petition on the paper using a magical alphabet, such as theban, enochian, malachain, etc. As you write down what you want to accomplish through candle magic-- a new job, healing for a friend, a change of residence, a new love affair, etc.-- visualize your dream coming true. Visualize the circumstances under which you might be offered a new job, imagine your employer telling you that your salary has been increased or conjure up a vision of your perfect love partner.

13 When you have completed writing down your petitio, carefully fold up the paper in a deliberately slow fashion. Place the end of the folded paper in the candle flame and set light to it. As you do this concentrate once more on what you want from life.

14 When you have completed your ritual, allow the candle to have completely burned away. You do not need to stay with the candle after the ritual, but make sure that is safe and that red-hot wax will not cause damage or fire. Never re-use a candle which has been lit in any magical ritual. IT should only be used in that ritual and then allowed to burn away or be disposed of afterwards.

15 If you are conducting a magical ritual which involves two people (e.g. an absent healing for a person some distance away) then the second person can be symbolically represented during the ritual by another candle. /all you need to do is find out the subject's birth date and burn the appropriate candle for that zodiacal sign.

These are as follows-
ARIES red
TAURUS green
GEMINI yellow
CANCER silver
LEO orange
VIRGO yellow
LIBRA pink
SCORPIO red
SAGITARIUS purple
CAPRICORN black
AQUARIUS all colors
PISCES mauve

Candle Basics 101

Important pointers on choosing a candle:

Choose a plain candle, of uniform shape. Having unusual or large candles can be distracting and is therefore not suitable for magickal use.

Candles used for magick should always be Virgin (unused) at the start of the ritual. Using secondhand candles or other materials in magick can have disastrous effects as they might have picked up vibrations from previous use, even if it was just on a dinner table!

It is a very good idea to make your own candles if they are for magickal use. It will increase the magickal potency of the candle many times.

It is very easy to make your own candles, simply heat the wax until liquid and pour it into a mould which is treaded with a wick. The wax should now be left to cool, after which the mould can be removed. Oils and colours can be added to the Wax for extra effects.

Charge your candle before using it in ritual. This can be done by annointing it with oils associated with the ritual or magick you intend on performing, or by simply touching it and charging it with your own energy.

Whilst charging the candle, visualixe the North and South Poles - rub the oil into the candle starting at either the North or South end and always brush in the same direction.

The oils used in the annointing of your candle should where possible always be natural fragrances.
Try to color the candles according the the color associations below.

Principle behind candle magic

Candle magic is based on the same principle as that of color therapy. Different colors have different frequencies which, in turn, have different effects on the human psyche. We can use these effects in a positive manner to enhance our mind power. Likewise, some candles are also fragrant and the different fragrances can also reflect differently on one’s feelings and emotions. Therefore, through candle magic, practitioners can make use of varying fragrances and colors of candles to create different effects for their clients.

According to the science of candle magic, specific candles may be used on specific days of the week, since these colors are also associated with the different Planets. Thus:

  • Sunday– Gold or yellow candles
  • Monday– Silver, Grey or White
  • Tuesday-Red
  • Wednesday-Purple
  • Thursday– Blue
  • Friday-Green
  • Saturday– Black or Purple
  • Candle colors for healing purpose

Candle magic therapists also recommend specific colored candles for addressing different illnesses. In brief, these are:

  • Allergies- Violet
  • Anxiety- Rose
  • Colds- Green/violet
  • Depression-Orange/Indigo/Rose
  • Insomnia-Blue
  • Indigestion-Yellow
  • Fever-Blue
  • Headaches-Green/blue
  • Diabetes-Yellow

Witchcraft: Beginner's Guide to Candle Magic

Candle magic harnesses the power of fire to bring change. Fire is the Element of transformation. Think for a moment how fire transforms things: it melts wax. It renders many organic materials (leaves, wood, flesh and bone) to ash. It softens hard metals to make them malleable for forging. It can heat substances, turning them from liquid to gas (water to steam, for example). If you mix ingredients together and put them into the fire, it can transform your batter into cake, your dough into bread. It brings light to the darkness and warmth to the cold.

Since human beings discovered fire, they were in awe of its power. They sought to harness that power, mostly to use its power of transformation. We continue this ancient tradition when we practice candle magic.

If you’d like to learn candle magic, this guide will take you through it step-by-step. Remember: the moment you begin planning a spell, you are in the process of casting it. Always keep your good intentions and a positive attitude, because you’re pouring your energy into the goal.

Step 1: Determine Your Magical Goal

As with all magical workings, it’s very important to put thought into your goal. Some tips to keep in mind when setting a magical goal:
Be specific (no ‘wishing’ or ‘make things better’ type goals)
Be realistic (don’t venture into the realm of fantasy here)
Consider the ethics of your actions (always act ethically and don’t interfere with free will)
Use positive language (avoid words like ‘don’t’, ‘can’t’, ‘won’t’ and ‘not’)
Break bigger goals down into a series of smaller goals

Try to write your goal in a single sentence, such as ‘I need to earn extra money to pay the electric bill’ or ‘I want to be protected from harm when I travel’.

Step 2: Design Your Spell

Use your goal to help guide you in designing your candle magic spell. Let’s say I’m doing a money spell for the electric bill. I’m going to do the most basic candle magic spell: I’m going to visualize my goal and light the candle to release the energy.

I’ve decided to keep components simple and to a minimum: a taper candle in a holder, some oils to dress the candle, maybe a few herbs and spices to lend some power

Finally, I want a chant to help raise energy. I can use one of the many chants found online, or I can custom-design one. The only important thing about the chant is that it has meaning to me. I also personally like to use rhymes, because they’re easy to remember and to get into a rhythm.

If you use magical timing, you could check a lunar calendar to decide the best moon sign or planetary hour for your spell.

Step 3: Collect Your Components

Choose components aligned with your goal. For our money spell, we already designed the spell to use one candle, a holder, and some oils, herbs and spices to lend power. We want to find a candle in the color to correspond with our goal. We also want to use oils, herbs and spices that correspond to the goal.

Looking in my magical cabinet, I might find:

  • A green virgin candle – candles should always be virgin, or never used, in candle magic. As for the color choice, use your instincts or see the *quick color correspondence guide below.
  • A gold candle holder – gold also represents wealth (it’s not real gold, it’s just gold-colored, but it’ll do)
  • Patchouli oil – an oil associated with prosperity
  • Ground cinnamon – a spice associated with wealth
  • Dragon’s blood – a resin that lends spells power
  • Ground ginger – a spice used to speed up results

A good thing to ask yourself when choosing correspondences is, “What things do I associate with my goal?” Green reminds me of money and wealth; if gold or brown or red remind you of money and wealth, you could use those colors. If I didn't have essential oil, I might just use corn oil— corn reminds me of cash crops and prosperity. You might use olive oil-- it's expensive, so you might see it as a luxury item.

I use ginger because I have had success with it speeding up results of spells. Let’s say you hate Chinese food because it makes you sick, and the smell of ginger reminds you of that. Then ginger would not be a good correspondence for you, because you associate it with being sick.
Quick Color Correspondence Guide

Red - assertiveness, courage, creativity, energy, passionate love, sex
Orange  - ambition, concentration, eloquence, legal issues, intellectual pursuits, success
Yellow - attractiveness, clarity, happiness, intelligence, persuasiveness, travel
Green - growth, fertility, harmony, health, prosperity, wealth
Blue - dream work, healing, intuition, loyalty, peace, spirituality
Purple - connecting to the higher self, communing with higher beings, meditation, psychic abilities and development

Pink - beauty, compassion, femininity, partnerships, romantic/innocent love
White - all-purpose (can be a substitute for any other color), cleansing, purification, truth, reflecting energy

Black - absorbing energy, banishing, breaking things (bad habits, hexes, etc.) discovering hidden wisdom, protection, self-defense
Grey - invisibility (not literal), loneliness, neutralizing energies and spells, wisdom

Brown - abundance, family, friends, gardening, grounding, pets, stability

No list is written in stone. What's most important is what colors represent to you. This is just a general guide-- feel free to tweak it, expand on it, or toss it if it doesn't resonate with you.

Candle Magic: Dressing the Candle

This is one of the most important parts of doing candle magic. You have to establish a psychic link between the candle, you and your goal. The process for doing this is known as ‘dressing the candle’.

Dressing the candle requires the candle and some oil (whatever you’ve chosen based on your goal). You have to pour the oil on your hands and rub it on the candle. There are a lot of different opinions on the ‘proper way’ to rub the oil on the candle. Here are some variations:

  • Rub the candle with oil from top to bottom
  • Rub the candle with oil from bottom to top
  • Rub from top to bottom to draw things to you; rub from bottom to tip to send things away
  • Start at the center of the candle and with oil from center to top, then from center to bottom.
  • Start at the ends of the candle. Rub oil on from the top end to the center, then from the bottom end to the center.

So which one is right? I think this is one of those things in which various methods work and you need to choose the one that works best for you.

The more important thing is your mental state as you rub the candle. As you rub the oil onto the candle, you should be strongly visualizing your intent and mentally ‘pouring’ that energy into the candle. You can use your chant at this point if you feel it will help and feel the energy building. Your hands may actually begin feeling tingly or the candle may begin to feel like it’s pulsing with energy—this is good, it’s working.

Do this for a couple of minutes, maybe 50 to 100 strokes, until you feel the candle is sufficiently charged. You can dress your candle well ahead of time if you like, or you can do it just before casting the spell. It’s up to you.

Candle Magic: Adding Power – Optional

We talked about using herbs and spices to help lend power to the spell, but how do we do that? It's pretty easy, really. After you choose herbs and spices that correspond with your goal, hold them in your hand and charge them with your intent. Roll the dressed candle in them, or sprinkle them over or around the candle.

Another way to add power is to scratch names, numbers or symbols in the wax of the candle. You can use a pin or your ritual knife to scratch things into the wax. For our money spell, I’ll scratch my name (to further connect myself to the candle) and I'll add the ancient rune FEHU into the wax-- FEHU is a rune that symbolizes prosperity.

If runes are meaningless to you, you might choose a different symbol, such as a dollar sign or money bag. Of course, you could always just write 'money' on it. That'll work, too.

A Guided Meditation for Manifestation may Help

Candle Magic: Casting the Spell

When the time has come to cast your spell, sit before your candle and follow these steps.

Meditate as long as necessary to relax yourself. Take a few deep breaths, release tension and let go of intrusive thoughts and worries. If you want, you can imagine these thoughts are helium-filled balloons, and visualize yourself letting go of them.

Begin to visualize your goal, as if your mission has already been accomplished.

Try to feel the feelings you would feel if your goal were accomplished—you probably would be happy, relaxed, relieved. Imagine what you’d look like, what your life would be, if your goal were accomplished.

When you have a clear visualization in mind, repeat your chant as often as you feel is necessary to raise energy. When you feel yourself bursting with your goal in mind, light the candle.

Imagine the candle’s aura—the light aura right outside of the flame – is growing, getting bigger and bigger, filling the whole area. Imagine it growing out, expanding into the universe to bring you your goal. You may continue chanting if you desire.

Spend some more time visualizing yourself having your goal. Hold the visualization as long as possible.

Candle Magic: Wrapping it Up

Allow the candle to burn out on its own. Make sure it’s in a safe place when you do this. It might go out before it’s finished, or it might completely melt away into nothing. It’s okay either way—don’t re-light it.

Bury the remnants and know that it’s done.

Belial is small and thin. He has platinum blonde hair.

Pseudomonarchia daemonum – Johann Wier (1583) (quoted)

Some saie that the king Belial was created immediately after Lucifer, and therefore they thinke that he was father and seducer of them which fell being of the orders. For he fell first among the worthier and wiser sort, which went before Michael and other heavenly angels, which were lacking. Although Beliall went before all them that were thrown down to the earth, yet he went not before them that tarried in heaven. This Belial is constrained by divine venue, when he taketh sacrifices, gifts, and offerings, that he againe may give unto the offerers true answers. But he tarrieth not one houre in the truth, except he be constrained by the divine power, as is said. He taketh the forme of a beautifull angell, sitting in a firie chariot; he speaketh faire, he distributeth preferments of senatorship, and the favour of friends, and excellent familiars: he hath rule over eightie legions, partlie of the order of vertues, partlie of angels; he is found in the forme of an exorcist in the bonds of spirits. The exorcist must consider, that this Beliall doth in everie thing assist his subjects. If he will not submit himselfe, let the bond of spirits be read: the spirits chaine is sent for him, wherewith wise Salomon gathered them togither with their legions in a brasen vessell, where were inclosed among all the legions seventie two kings, of whome the cheefe was Bileth, the second was Beliall, the third Asmoday, and above a thousand thousand legions. Without doubt (I must confesse) I learned this of my maister Salomon; but he told me not why he gathered them together, and shut them up so: but I beleeve it was for the pride of this Beliall. Certeine nigromancers doo saie, that Salomon, being on a certeine daie seduced by the craft of a certeine woman, inclined himselfe to praie before the same idoll, Beliall by name: which is not credible. And therefore we must rather thinke (as it is said) that they were gathered together in that great brasen vessell for pride and arrogancie, and throwne into a deepe lake or hole in Babylon. For wise Salomon did accomplish his workes by the divine power, which never forsooke him. And therefore we must thinke he worshipped not the image Beliall; for then he could not have constrained the spirits by divine vertue: for this Beliall, with three kings were in the lake. But the Babylonians woondering at the matter, supposed that they should find therein a great quantitie of treasure, and therefore with one consent went downe into the lake, and uncovered and brake the vessell, out of the which immediatlie flew the capteine divels, and were delivered to their former and proper places. But this Beliall entred into a certeine image, and there gave answer to them that offered and sacrificed unto him: as Tocz. in his sentences reporteth, and the Babylonians did worship and sacrifice thereunto.

Goetia – S. L. MacGregor Mathers (1904) (quoted)

The Sixty-eighth Spirit is Belial. He is a Mighty and a Powerful King, and was created next after LUCIFER. He appeareth in the Form of Two Beautiful Angels sitting in a Chariot of Fire. He speaketh with a Comely Voice, and declareth that he fell first from among the worthier sort, that were before Michael, and other Heavenly Angels. His Office is to distribute Presentations and Senatorships, etc.; and to cause favour of Friends and of Foes. He giveth excellent Familiars, and governeth 50 Legions of Spirits. Note well that this King Belial must have Offerings, Sacrifices and Gifts presented unto him by the Exorcist, or else he will not give True Answers unto his Demands. But then he tarrieth not one hour in the Truth, unless he be constrained by Divine Power. And his Seal is this, which is to be worn as aforesaid, etc.

His number is seven, and he presides over the Thirteenth Sign of the Zodiac of which there exists only one, and his time is any when the Moon is void of course. He Rules from the North.
The mind is very tricky, especially the part we magicians use. The god portion of the mind can do absolutely anything. Satan trusts his own, and no one else with this power. It will not activate for anyone, and if it does it will do so as a terrifying lesson to those who are without who attempt to harness this power. Sorath presides over the “closer part,” the "unknowable mind" current of energy and is the God over the energy emitted by every Sun in the Universe. He rules the center of magnetism and the factor of life for all, along with photogenes and solar power of all kinds. Sorath stated that all Suns in the Universe affect us, not only our own. Northern fire, the Sun above. Lastly, miracles are not something the Gods cause to happen. The Gods are beyond that. Their world is past the need or understanding of what a miracle is. Miracles come from US. What is a miracle to one may curse another; what is lost can be found by another for example.
